GTA Style Quest Line

Picture

I was commissioned to create a quest line for an open world game similar to GTA. This quest line had to involve a whaling facility, and multiple pathways to success. I had a lot of fun with this one.

The idea I came up with was heavily narrative; the player has a contact that is an ex-Greenpeace officer with some neurotic tendencies. He is convinced that Greenpeace and the mob have some kind of covert operation going on, and that it starts at the whaling facility. Throughout the quest line, the player has to use various types of traversal and gameplay mechanics to discover the truth;
the mob has been smuggling illicit items through Greenpeace's whale monitoring technology and the natural migration of humpback whales, using the whaling facility to surgically implant/extract capsules containing the items.

This mission ends in a grand finale in which the player must chase down a hijacked Greenpeace boat using their own hijacked whaling boat, fighting off enemy Zodiacs (military rafts) using water cannons, and eventually harpooning the Greenpeace boat to capture the mastermind behind this plot. At this point the player must make a choice; shut down the smuggling operation, or commandeer it for their own profit. Either way, the player is rewarded with the whaling boat, as well as recurring optional missions in which the player can participate for profit (shut down another whaling boat, or go pick up a whale).
